Bio/Artist Statement
I approach my photography with a jazz sensibility. Projects start with a general idea or mood, but each shoot is an improvisation. The images are shaped by the moment and the subject itself. What I’m pursuing is essence, not a predefined image.
Since the mid 2000’s the images I create reside somewhere between the subjective, and shifting landscape of memory, and the surreal and quickly fading recollection of dreams upon waking. There is a constant search for the ungraspable. Familiar and unknown at the same time. A bit of mystery.
Viewers must bring their own interpretation to my images. Though the moments are true - unplanned, uncontrolled, and often intimate but I inject ambiguity by removing discernible focus — either literally, or through framing and composition. The viewer must draw their own conclusions.
The act of defocusing removes specificity with the intent to move towards universality — while still feeling somehow personal.
